The following workshops are available (at no
charge*) to Girl Scout troops within the Moccasin Bend Council's
jurisdiction
and to schools, churches, civic groups, youth serving agencies,
and other youth clubs for boys and girls in grades five through
twelve in the following Tennessee counties thanks to a grant from
the State of Tennessee (Bledsoe, Bradley, Grundy, Hamilton, McMinn,
Meigs, Marion, Polk, Rhea, Sequatchie, and Van Buren).
*Must provide a new unopened package of AA
batteries per baby (Course 502A/B)

"It's My Decision"
This program has received the following prestigous awards:
Girl Scouts of the USA "Quality Recognition Award (one of twelve
councils in the Nation selected).Mutual of America "Comunity
Partnership Award" (one of ten organizations in the Nation
selected).This program is designed for girls to learn about making
good decisions. Professionals specially trained in adolescent behavior
lead discussions on the following course topics.

Course #500
Money Matters:Students
prepare a one-year child care budget to learn budgeting
skills and financial responsibilities.
Course #501
Baby Think It Over Handbook:
Instructions of operations and
care for Infant Simulator; Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
is discussed; and Infant Care Seat Safety Tips are demonstrated.
Students complete a written assignment prior to checking
out Infant Simulator.
Course #502A (Prerequisite:
Courses #500 and #501)
Infant Simulator Hands-On Training:
Students check out Infant
Simulator for a 48-hour "Parenting" period. A
diary is used to record experiences. (Allow 10 minutes per
baby for checkout.)

Infant Simulator Check-In:
Infant Simulators are returned
and computer readings are recorded for grading purposes.
(Allow 5 minutes per baby for checkin.)

Course #503
Communication/Listening Skills: Conflict
resolution, learning to say NO and sticking to it; communication
builders and trust games.
Course #504
Self-Esteem Builders:
How we see ourselves and how others see us; activities to build
self-esteem and self respect.

Reproductive
Anatomy and Physiology:
Discussion
of the basic reproductive system--both male and female systems can
be discussed with the adolescents separated by gender into two different
classrooms; the discussions may be centered on just the one gender
or both can be discussed.
Course #506
Teen Self-Breast
Exam: This
workshop was especially designed and developed for girls only between
12 and 18 years of age. A registered nurse from the Breast Center
at Memorial Hospital conducts this class complete with breast-exam
models and a short video for girls in this age range.

Substance
Abuse: An expert in this field discusses
alcohol abuse, drug abuse and living with a substance abuser.

Sexually
Transmitted Diseases:
The eight
most common sexually transmitted diseases are discussed; included
may be slides of the diseases, their symptoms and effects on the
body/reproductive system; HIV/AIDS can be briefly discussed, but
it is recommended that a full session be dedicated to this subject.

HIV/AIDS:
Arrangements are made for a professional from Chattanooga CARES
(The Regional HIV/AIDS Resource Center) to address this issue, including
transmission of the disease, the latest statistics, and current
treatments.

Career
Exploration/Planning: Where,
when and how to decide on a career path; what direction to take,
and how to get their successfully.

Job Readiness Skills:
Resume writing and interview skills.

Two plays
are available :
"It's Love, Isn't It?" is a 30-minute one-act play which
deals with violent dating situations. It is followed by a facilitated
discussion with a professional counselor from the Family Violence
Shelter.
"Crossing the Line" deals with date and acquaintance rape.
A facilitated discussion is led by a professional counselor from
the
Sexual Assault Center. Both of these plays are appropriate for girls
